Hit it farther | Feel better
At first glance, you may not feel fitness in golf is important. Afterall, it is far removed from running the 100 yard dash or dunking a basketball, but fitness plays a key role in how well you perform and how long you keep playing! Golf demands a combination of strength, balance, flexibility and endurance. For the casual golfer, world class fitness is not required, but obtaining a certain level of fitness can improve consistency and decrease the chance of injury.
The golf swing is a very complex motion that relies on core muscles (feet, knees, hips & shoulders) working together to avoid excessive torque and twisting. As the round drags on into the 3rd and 4th hour, most players are likely to lose power or accuracy. Studies have indicated that golfers with better physical conditioning hit longer drives and maintain club control.
Swinging a club 80 - 100 times per round (not including practice swings) can strain your back elbows or knees if you're not adequately prepared. Lower back pain is the #1 ailment for golfers, and a bit of strength and flexibility can prevent it. Not to mention, if you walk the course (4-5 miles) on uneven terrain, fitness will play a key role in your success!
In addition to physical training, you also need proper technique to achieve power, and to reduce common movements that may induce injury. Stretching, swinging the club properly, practicing efficiently can all produce better results.
This program is not about producing gym rats, but rather a way forward to achieving a certain level of fitness and flexibility and then, maintaining it. If you're asking yourself "should I", perhaps you should consider "why wouldn't I"?
